Artemisia genus is a big medicinal genus of Anthemideae ( Compositae ). There are many studies on the chemical constituents and pharmacological activity of Artemisia genus. Artemisia anomala S.Moore, a perennial herb, is mainly distributed in Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Jiangxi and Hunan provinces. It had been reported to display dissipating blood stasis to promote menstruationg, stopping bleeding, detumescence and promoting digestion. However, from ancient to present, the medicinal herbs resource of liujinu is different, the species are in a mess. In the north, Siphonostegia chinensis Benth which belongs to Scrophulariaceae was used to beiliujinu. In order to change the confused state of liujinu specie and provide scientific basics for reasonablely using the medicine, a systematic study on chemical constituents of Artemisia anomala S.Moore was carried out used by various chromatographers to set up the foundation for studying pharmacologic substance basis and establishing more scientific quality standard.Twenty-eight compounds have been isolated from the 70% ethanolic extract of the whole herb of Artemisia anomala S. Moore. On the basis of spectral data and physical-chemical properties, twenty-four of them were respectively identified as cyclobalanone ( 1 ),friedelin ( 2 ),sorghumol ( 3 ),pseudoneolinderane ( 4 ),β-sitosterol ( 5 ),stigmasterol ( 6 ),herniarin ( 7 ),scopoletin ( 8 ),isorhamnetin ( 9 ),kaempferol ( 10 ),eupatorin ( 11 ),isofraxidin ( 12 ),luteolin ( 13 ),daucosterol ( 14 ),n-decyl alcohol ( 15 ),apigenin ( 16 ),quercetin ( 17 ),caffeic acid ( 18 ),cosmosiin ( 19 ),kaempferol-3-O-α-L-rhamnopyranoside ( 20 ),quercetin-3-O-α-L-rhamnopyranoside ( 21 ),avicularin( 22 ),luteolin-7-O-β-D-glucopyranoside ( 23 ),D-1-O-methyl-chiroinsitol ( 24 ). Among of them, compounds 1,3,4,20,22 and 24 are obtained from this genus for the first time and compounds 2,6,9~19,21 and 23 are isolated from this plant for the first time. These results provided new chemical evidences for the bioactive investigation of this plant. In this study, it has been found that Artemisia anomala S.Moore is rich in flavonoids, coumarins, sterolides and triterpenoids, but the content of sesquiterpene lactones is low. The relations between those compounds and pharmacological actions are expected to be further studied.Chemical constituents and pharmacological activity of Artemisia genus were reviewed detailedly. And we also summarized the NMR spectroscopic features of flavonoids and coumarins.
