OBJECTIVE: The present study was to investigate plasma levels of ADMA in population of atherosclerotic cerebral infarction as compared to healthy controls. We determined if ADMA was elevated in atherosclerotic cerebral infarction, correlated with disease clinical stage and grouping. To investigate the role of ADMA in cerebral infarction incidence.METHODS: Collected 68 patients with atherosclerotic cerebral infarction in our hospital as the case group and 50 healthy examination individuals as the control group. Plasma levels of ADMA was measured by highperformance liquid chromatography (HPLC).RESULTS:1. Compared with control group, the levels of plasma ADMA in cerebral infarction group were increased obviously (1.31±0.57μg/mL versus 0.68±0.52μg/mL,P<0.01) .2. In the patients with cerebral infarction, the ADMA concentration of acute stroke group was 1.40±0.61μg/mL.And the ADMA concentration of non-acute group was 1.21±0.51μg/mL.There was no difference between the two groups(P>0.05). But the two groups were both significantly higher compared with the control group(P<0.01).3. In the patients with cerebral infarction, there were 51 patients with first stroke. And there were 17 patients with recurrent stroke. Mean ADMA of first stroke group was 1.29±0.57μg/mL. And the mean ADMA of recurrent stroke group was 1.40±0.58μg/mL. There was no difference between the two groups(P>0.05). But the two groups were both significantly higher compared with the control group(P<0.01).CONCLUSIONS: Elevated ADMA levels are associated with atherosclerotic cerebral infarction. ADMA may be an detection index for ACI patients.
