Objective:To investigate the clinical characteristics of non-smoking lung cancer patients in terms of epidemiological, histological type, treatment outcome, prognosis, which will give us some information on diagnosing and treatment in this population.Materials and Methods:Information of pathalogically or cytologically confirmed non-smoking lung cancer patients admitted to our hospital from July 2002 to June 2006 were collected.Excel and SPSS statistical software were employed in the analysis procedure. Results:Of 1,526 lung cancer patients,289 cases, accounting for 19.04 percent, were regarded as non-smoking lung cancer according collection of patients' history. The number of female and male patients was 148 and 141,respectively.The age range from 19 to 80 with median age was 57,and patients predominantly falled in the age range of 50~69.232 cases were confirmed to be non-small cell lung cancer:Adenocarcinoma 116 cases (alveolar carcinoma 11 cases),squamous cell carcinoma 87 cases, adenosquamous carcinoma 29 cases. There are 12 cases of small-cell lung cancer and 1 case of lung carcinosarcoma.44 cases failed to be defined pathologically.34.4%patients were adenocarcinoma in the Stage ofⅠ~Ⅲ_A, whereas, adenocarcinoma accounted for 60.7%in the stage ofⅢ_B andⅣ. 269 patients were stratified according to the TNM stage system(2007), 64,44,161 were stageⅠ~Ⅱ_B.stageⅢ_A,stageⅢB andⅣ,respectively. Among 12 patients with small cell lung cancer,8 presented with limited disease. The median survival time of StageⅠ_B patients treated with surgery plus chemotherapy versus surgery alone was 33.1 months versus 23.3 months (P=0.148);The median survival time was 21.1 months versus 7.0 months (P=0.001)for stageⅢ_A patients treated with surgery plus chemotherapy versus supportive care alone. For patients with stageⅢ_B orⅣ,longer median survival time of 21.2 and 15.0 months was observed for those received chemotherapy, comparing with 7.0 months and 5.0 months(P<0.05)for those received supportive care alone. The 1-,2-year survival rates of StageⅢ_B andⅣpatients treated with chemotherapy or supportive care alone were 59.38%,34.38%and 28.00%,12.00%,respectively.the difference was significant(P<0.05).Conclusion:With regard to the ratio of male versus female, there is no obvious difference was observed in the population of non-smoking lung cancer patients. Most of the patients presented with stageⅢandⅣat diagnosis, with a largest proportion confirmed to be adenocarcinoma.Surgery plus adjuvant chemotherapy seems to extend the median survival time for stageⅠ_B patients. Adjuvant chemotherapy should be considered postoperatively as standard treatment for StageⅢ_A patients.StageⅢ_B andⅣpatients treated with active standard chemotherapy have significantly longer survival time and higher 1 and 2-year survival rate.
