Objective: To evaluate the efficacy and security of intravitreous injection with triamcinolone acetonide(TA) for diabetic macular edema. Methods: A total of 36 eyes in 33 patients with diabetic macular edema were collected. The average age was 56.3±2.6. All patients were taken general eye examination, intraocular pressure(IOP), fundus angiography(FFA), and optic coherence tomography(OCT). The pre- treatment average visual acuity was 0.08±0.02, the mean IOP was 18.2±3.11mmHg, and the mean thickness of macular fovea was 764±225um respectively. Intravitreous injection with 4mg TA (0.1ml) was performed on each patient. The average follow-up duration was 8.7 months. Results: The post-treatment visual acuity, IOP, retinal thichness and the changes of lens and fundus was observed and recorded on 1, 3, 6 months. Results All eyes had improved visual acuity. The mean visual acuity was improved to 0.27±0.03, 0.35±0.05 and 0.16±0.03 respectively. The mean thickness of macular fovea was 214±45 um, 203±97 um and 485±129 um respectively. Both the post-treatment visual acuity and retinal thickness had statistical significance compared with that pre-treatment. The IOP measured at 6 months show no significant difference with pre-treatment IOP. The development of lens opacity was observed in 7 eyes, and no serious complications such as retinal detachment, vitreous hemorrhage, and infectious endophthalmitis were found.
