Objective To observe the changes of serum soluble intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (slCAM-1) in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC) before and after transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE) and to identify clinical significance of serum sICAM-1 in estimating the activity of the tumour. Method Serum sICAM-1 in patients with HCC were detected by ELISA before the first TACE, 3 days after TACE , 7 days after TACE and 1 month after TACE respectively. Results Compared with control group (201.07±68.81)μg/L, the level of serum sICAM-1 in patients with HCC before the first TACE (647.94±95.69)μg/L increased significantly (P<0.01) .The level of serum sICAM-1 had not significant difference in patients with HCC before the first TACE between different AFP groups. The level of serum sICAM-1 declined remarkably 3 after TACE, 7 days after TACE(567.85±99.79μg/L, 542.84±89.94μg/L, respectively) , and the level of serum sIC AM-1 of 7 days is lower than the level of serum sICAM-1 of 3 days after TACE (P =0.022<0.05) . The level of serum sICAM-1 had significant difference between 1 month after TACE and before TACE in patients of HCC without portal vein embolus(P<0.01 ) , and the diminished extent of the tumor of 1 month after TACE was directly correlated with the corresponding descent of slCAM-1 (r=0.77, P <0.01).Conclusion It can be concluded that slCAM-1 levels in patients with primary liver cancer were closely related to the activity of the tumour .The changes of sICAM-1 are valuable in estimating the prognosis after TACE and evaluating the indication of re-TACE treatment in patients with primary liver cancer especially those AFP are negative.
