Objective:The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects and gingival inflammation related to seveval retraction agents(0.05%Tetrahydrozoline HCl,0.05%Oxymetazoline HCl,15%AlCl3,15.5%Fe2(SO4)3,0.1%Epinephrine HCl),to choose the best retraction agent for the clinic.Methods: Sixty maxillary first premolar of thirty students divided into six groups randomly. Six different kinds of retraction agents(0.05%Tetrahydrozoline HCl,0.05% Oxymetazoline HCl,15%AlCl3,15.5%Fe2(SO4)3,0.1%Epinephrine HCl,0.9%NS) were used randomly in different tooth.Before and after removal of retraction cords immersed in test solutions containing 0.05%Tetrahydrozoline HCl,0.05%Oxymeta -zoline HCl,15%AlCl3, 15.5%Fe2(SO4)3,0.1%Epinephrine HCl,0.9%NS,compared degree of gingival inflammation according to GCF and GCF-AST measured before the retraction and in the first day,third day,fifth day,seventh day,ninth day after removal of retraction cords were recorded,using electron analytical balance and automatic biochemistry analyzer.Silicon rubber base impressions were made before and after gingival displacement,then casts were made.Sections of the casts were sawed out,and the teeth under investigation were sectioned bucco-lingually at the buccal eminence,followed by quantitative measurement of the width of the retracted sulcus,under a low-power microscope.The width was measured as the distance from the tooth to the crest of the gingiva.Results:1.The GCF variety of all the groups presented an ascending tendency after retraction till the first day to the top,and then began to fall,gradually recovering close to the original level.The GCF variety of Tetrahydrozoline HCl,Oxymetazoline HCl,and NS seemed to recover earlier than those of Epinephrine HCl,AlCl3,Fe2(SO4)3. The GCF variety of Fe2(SO4)3 and Tetrahydrozoline HCl,and that of Fe2(SO4)3 and NS made significant differences,the other groups made no significance(P<0.05).2.The GCF-AST variety of all the groups except NS presented an ascending tendency after retraction till the third day to the top,and then began to fall,gradually recovering close to the original level.The GCF-AST variety of Tetrahydrozoline HCl,Oxymetazoline HCl seemed to recover earlier than those of Epinephrine HCl,AlCl3,Fe2(SO4)3.The GCF-AST variety of Fe2(SO4)3 and NS made significant differences,while the other groups make no significance(P<0.05).3.After the comparion of the sulcus among all the groups after retraction,the effects turned out to be as follow:Tetrahydrozoline HCl and Oxymetazoline HCl were the biggist,the seconed were AlCl3 and Fe2(SO4)3,the next was Epinephrine HCl,and NS was the smallest.Conclusion:1.All the test agents caused the transient gingival irratation,and it could recover in a few days.15.5%Fe2(SO4)could induce more obvious gingival inflammation.The other groups made no significance among.2.The effects of all the agents followed as an decreasing orders as follow:0.05% Tetrahydrozoline HCl and 0.05%OxymetazolineHCl were the biggist,the seconed were 15.%AlCl3 and 15.5%Fe2(SO4)3,the next was 0.1%Epinephrine HCl,and 0.9%NS was the smallest.3.0.05%TetrahydrozolineHCl and 0.05%OxymetazolineHCl caused a slighter gingival inflammation among these five agents.As a gingival retraction agent,they possess a tender property,only inducing a minimal irritation,and produce a predominant effect,and own a brighter future in its clinic applicaton.
