Objective: Gastric cancer and gastric stromal tumor represent important health problems in the worlds. At present gastric cancer and gastric stromal tumor were system therapies which mainly depended on operation. Therefore, it is of utmost importance that accurate preoperative diagnosis of gastric cancer and gastric stromal tumor be performed. EUS is a test facility which combined with the technologies of intracavitary ultrasound and endoscope. Herein, the endoscopic ultrasonography application of gastric cancer and gastric stromal tumor in preoperative diagnosis was evaluated. Methods: 22 patients of Gastric cancer or gastric stromal tumor who had been examined by EUS were collected and retrospectively analyzed. The location, extent and character of tumor can be definited according to the alteration of the 5-layer structure of gastric wall and adjacent organization. The samples were fixed by 10 % Formaldehyde, imbedded by paraffin, then series cut with the width of 5μm and stained with hematoxylin-eosin. The samples also were examined with immunohistoche-mistry.Results: The EUS and pathologic results were compared with each other. EUS diagnosis results: six gastric cancers were located in sinus ventricul at all. Two patients were T2 stage and four patients were T3 stage. Four patients had lymph node metastasis. The rest was not. The gastric stromal tumors were located in cardiac portion in 5 cases, corpus gastricus in 3 cases, sinus ventricul in 2 cases. One case was diagnosed lipoma and one case was diagnosed cyst. The rest were diagnosed stomach lump. Pathologic results showed that 6 patients were diagnosed gastric adenocarcinoma. Three patients were T2 stage and the other patients were T3 stage. One patient was N0 stage and 4 patients were N1 stage. One patient was N2 stage. 16 cases were gastric stromal tumors. 12 cases were benign and 4 cases were malignant. The accuracy rates of EUS were 83.6 (5/6) and 66.7% (4/6) in the diagnosis of gastric cancer in T staging and N staging, kappa index was 0.6667and 0.5714. The accuracy rate of EUS was 62.5% (10/16) in the diagnosis of gastric stromal tumors. Conclusion: EUS has a high diagnosis value of gastric cancer and gastric stromal tumor before operation. Especially, EUS have some values in pre-operative TN staging. The pre-operative EUS may provide much information and influences to the choice of therapy for gastric cancer and gastric stromal tumor.
