Objective:To investigate the effects of biofeedback in treating patients with masticatoryspasm by using electromyograph. Methods:Ten cases were chosen from the patients whose final diagnosis wasmasticatory spasm in our hospital. The cases were given EMG biofeedbacktreatments and psychological supports under the guidance of electromyograph. Then the cases were measured and analysed by electromyograph prior and postthe occlusal adjustment. Through the clinical examination such as occlusaland EMG activity of masticatory muscles, the value of Fricton'sCraniomandibular Index, the value of visual analogue scale (VAS) to evaluatethe clinical effect of biofeedback in treating patients with masticatory spasm, and through the value of the Symptom Checklist 90(SCL-90) to evaluatelevels of psychosocial incapacity of the cases.Results:1. After two months of the EMG biofeedback treatments, the patient's clinicalexamination symptom was reduced or disappeared. The total effective rate was100%. Compared to pre-treatment, the value of patient's VAS decreasedobviously. 2. Compared to pre-treatment, the value of patient's CMI decreased obviously with statistic difference(P<0.01).3. Compared to pre-treatment, the value of patient's SCL-90 decreased on somatization and hostility with statistic difference(P<0.05).4. Compared to pre-treatment, the value of patient's VAS decreased obviously with statistic difference(P<0.01).Conclusions:EMG biofeedback treatment and psychological supports under the guidance ofelectromyograph were effective to treat patients with masticatory spasm.
