Objective:Bronchiloalveolar carcinoma(BAC)is an important subtype of adenocarcinoma. The prevalence of BAC has risen worldwide.BAC appears to behave quite differently than those without BAC feature, which has unique epidemiology, pathology, radiology, clinical features and natural history. We aim to investigate intensively the clinical features of BAC and make some contributions to the improvements of the diagnosis and treatment of BAC.Methods:Between 2004 and 2007,24 patients were submitted to surgical resection for BAC.There are 11 men and 13 women;the average age was 54 years. The dominating symptoms were cough, spitting, hemoptysis, chest distress, pectoralgia and fever etc.Nineteen patients(79.2%)were not definitely diagnosed by pathology. In consequence of the tumor,20 lobectomies,1 pueumonectomies,1 wedge resection and 2 palliative resections were performed.Lymph node dissections were according to the Naruke' s lymph node distribution map of lung cancer. All specimen were confermed BAC pathologically.Out of them, there are 13â… tumors,6â…¡tumors,5â…¢tumors and no stageâ…£patients, according to international standard(TNM).Results:In this series there were no death and severe complications during the perioperative period.Nine recurrences were found in the follow-up period:five intrathoracic, three mediastinal lymphatic and one extrathoracic metastases developed.Four patients died till January 2007.The survival rates of one year, three years and five years were 95.9%, 62.3%and 49.6%.Conclusion:Bronchioloalveolar carcinoma is not infrequent in clinical work. Most tumors can not be definitely diagnosed by pathology.Surgical resection is the preferred means of BAC treatment. The prognosis of BAC is better than other types of pulmonary adenocarcinomas.
