ObjectiveAs there is going to be more and more old people in our country , the ratio of occurrence of the knee ostesoarthritis grows rapidly. The quanlity of life has been badly damaged by knee ostesoarthritis. This study try to compare efficacy, safty and side efect of the methood of conbined treatment of traditional Chinese medicine and western medicine towestern medicine only . We try to find out a better and safer method to treat the knee ostesoarthritis by setting up control group and comparing interclass transversally of the pretherapy and posttherapy.MethodsThis was a 5-week, randomized, double-blind trial. 94 Patients with OA of the knee were randomly divided into treating group (treated by treatment ofintegrated traditional and western medicine) and control group (treated by western medicine)., 47 patients in treating group and other 47 in controll group. After 5 weeks therapy, we caculate the scores of the function of knee according to the chapt "Tegner" (chapt 1). Also we found out the side effects. After the treatment course, the available data were collected, then data would be done through statistics. The symptoms, physical signs' integral, and appreciated the therapeutic effect an the adverse effect completely of the two groups would be assessed . It can help to find out a better and safer methodto theat the OA of the knee.Results1. The total effective rate: the treatment group is 91. 5%, the control group is 74. 5%, and the two groups have statistical significant(p<0. 05). 2. The scores of the function of the knee:both the two groups, after 5 weeks therapy, have statistical significant comparing to no theapy (p<0. 05) . And the inter comparison has statistical significant, too (p<0. 05) .3. The adverse effects: In the two groups no abnormalities were found in the three routine examinations, Hepatic function, renal function and blood coagulation. But 2 patients had light abodominal distention in the treatment group, and 3 had abdominal pain and poor appetite in the control group.Conclusiontreatment ofintegrated traditional and western medicine not only significantly improved the function of the knee joints, but also obviously improved the quanity of life. Its total effective rate is better than the control group, with light adverse effect which shows a great clinical using prospect.
