Objective: To study the cause and meaning of positive Babinski response in sleep among normal adults, accordingly further investigate whether special fingers sign can be induced or not in sleep among children and analyze the reason and meaning. Methods: 15 normal healthy adults and 35 children on different age stages were monitored by polysomnography or EEG while they were asleep to examine whether Babinski response and special fingers sign could be induced or not. They were so examined while awake. Results: Babinski sign was not induced in adults when they were awake; Babinski sign could be induced in 8 adults among 15 adults in sleep (8/15); adults showed Babinski sign more on II,III stage of NREM sleep, fewer on IV stage (2/15) , almost not on REM sleep (1/15); special fingers sign were not shown on adults when they were asleep and awake. Special fingers sign were not shown in children when they were awake; the general proportion of induced special fingers sign was about 54.3%(19/35) in sleep of children , children showed special fingers sign mainly on II,III stage of NREM sleep, there shown no special fingers sign on else period of sleep. The respective proportion of shown special fingers sign gradually decreased with aging. Conclusions: Babinski sign and special fingers sign of children in sleep occurs in association with loss of supraspinal inhibitory influences on pyramidal tract. When we induce pathological sign in clinic, the examinees should be keptawake if possible unless they are in coma. It is more difficult for pyramidaltracts of dominating upper limbs to be inhibited than those of dominating lowerlimbs, which is meaningful in guiding clinical work.
