Herba Pogostemonis, a Chinese drug used most commonly in China, is mainly cultivated in different regions in Guangdong and Hainan provinces. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, this herb is considered as having follow indications:to eliminate dampness from the middle jiao, to regulate the middle jiao, to eliminate summer-heat andexpel the affection of exogenous summer-heat and dampness. In the course of evaluating the quality of this traditional herb, we found that the water extracts have distinct bioactivities;but the most of the constituents were unknown, especially the water-soluble compounds. In this thesis, constituents extracted with 50% EtOH from the dried aerial parts of Pogostemon cahlin (Blanco) Benth. were studied. Column chromatography with silica gel and Sephadex LH-20 gel were employed to isolate and purify the ingredients. Nine compounds were isolated and their structures were elucidated by means of physicochemical properties and UV,IR,MS,NMR, respectively. They are, 3,5-Dihydroxy-7,4'- dimethoxy- flavone(â… ),3,5-dihydroxy-7,3',4'-trimethoxyflavone(â…¡),5,4'-di- hydroxy-7,3'-dimethoxyflavone(â…¢),3,5,4'-trihydroxy-7,3'-dimeth- oxyflavone(â…£) Vanillic acid(â…¤), Protocatechuic acid(â…¥), apigeni- n(â…¦), apigenin-7-O-glucoside (â…§),and daucosterol(â…¨). Compoundsâ…¡,â…¢,â…£,â…¤andâ…¥were firstly found in this Chinese drug.
