Objective: To investigate the changes of serum adiponectin level and the relationships among serum adiponectin, oxidative stress and liver function in patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD).Methods: Eighty-nine NAFLD patients (forty-seven of the patients also with metabolic syndrome) and thirty control subjects were randomly selected in the study. Abdominal ultrasound was taken for fatty liver examination.Body height, weight, waistline, hip circumference, BMI, WHR and blood pressure were measured. Biochemical assay was used to determine FBG, ALT,GGT, TG, HDL-C ,adiponectin, MDA,GSH, GSSG. and so on.The relationships between serum adiponectin and other clinical factors above were also analyzed. Results: The level of serum adiponectin was significantly decreased and oxidative stress degree was obviously increased in patients with NAFLD when compared with controls (p<0.01). The more oxidative stress degree was, the less serum adiponectin level was in NAFLD patients with MS or with abnormal liver function (p<0.01). Serum adiponectin level correlated positively with GSH,GSH/GSSG ( r=0.695 , r=0.881,all p<0.001),and negatively with ALT, AST, GGT, MDA, GSSG(r=-0.772, r=-0.710,r=-0.665, r=-0.828,r=-0.897, all p<0.001). Multiple regression analysis showed that GSH/GSSG,GSSG,MDA,GSH,ALT were independent related factors influencing serum adiponectin level .Conclusion: Serum adiponectin level is closely associated with the degree of oxidative stress and liver damage. Combined assay of adiponectin, MDA and GSH/GSSG is helpful in predicting a tendency toward the course of NAFLD.
