Object: To study the mechanism of argon laser photocoagulation treatment of ischemic branch retinal vein occlusion, analysis the improvement of oxygen and blood supply and the affection on the function of the retina caused by laser photocoagulation. It is expected to supply an important basis for objectively evaluating the effect of clinical laser treatment of ischemic branch retinal vein occlusion. Methods: 30 cases of patients with 30 eyes are diagnosed as ischemic branch retinal vein occlusion. These eyes are checked respectively by F-ERG and mf-ERG before and after argon laser photocoagulation three monthes later. All of the data are analyzed by the statistics. Here, t-test is chosen to do this. Results: 1. For F-ERG, there is a remarkable difference of the latencies of a-wave and b-wave between pre- and post-photocoagulation(P<0.05); on the contrary, the amplitude of a-wave and b-wave(P>0.05) and the total amplitude of OPs are not(P>0.05). 2. For mf-ERG, in macular area (Ring 1 and Ring2), there is a remarkable difference of the latencies of P1 and N1 between pre- and post-photocoagulation(P<0.05); on the contrary, the response density of P1 and the amplitude of N1 are not(P>0.05). In the photocoagulation quadrant, there is a remarkable difference of the response density of P1 and the amplitude of N1(P<0.05) as well as the latencies of P1 and N1(P<0.05) between pre- and post-photocoagulation.Conclusion: Focal retinal argon laser photocoagulation can not lead to panretinal dysfunction, retinal circulation function would be retained, but it would affect the speed of information transfer. Focal retinal argon laser photocoagulation did not cause retinal dysfunction in macular area, it demonstrates the security of argon laser treatment for ischemic branch retinal vein occlusion. Photocoagulation destroyed the photoreceptors and bipolar cells or Müller's cells inpathogene-tic quadrant, thereby reducing the consumption of retinal blood and oxygen and prevent the development of ischemic branch retinal vein occlusion.
