Objective: The pathogenesis of chronic hepatitis B has yet been unclear at present. Cytokine secreted by immune cells play an important role in the occurrence, development and change of chronic hepatitisB.As the newly discovered cytokine--Interleukin-24, the study showed that Interleukin-24 has various biological activity and great potential to induce organism immune response. What will be the role of in pathogenesis of chronic hepatitis b is still not clear, however. So this research will study the serum levels of interleukin-24(IL-24) in patients with chronic hepatitis B probe into its clinical values and possible roles in the pathogenesis of chronic hepatitis B further.Mthods: Screening 90 chronic hepatitis B patients, 20 healthy subjects and 30 HBV carriers as the research object ,who all come from NanChang university first affiliated hospital infection department policlinic and ward , from April 2007 to seven 2007. Diagnose conform with《prevention and treatment to virus hepatitis》made by the tenth national viral hepatitis and/or hepatopathy academic meeting (Xi An) at the year 2000,The serum levels of IL-24 from whole research subjects were measured by a double-antibody sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), Parameters of liver function including alanine aminotransferase(ALT) and total bilirubin(TBIL) were detected by automatic biochemistry analyzer, meanwhile HBV-DNA content was detected by real time PCR. In the same time, the hepatitis A, B, C, D and E virus markers were examined in all patients. Furthermore, we analyzed the association between IL-24 and clinical parameters including ALT, TBIL and HBV-DNA content. the statistical treatment for the whole result were compared with t test when two groups compared ,LSD test was adopted when there were differences between three groups. Results: 1.Compared with the normal controls(322.97±26.28 pg/ml), the levels of IL-24 were significantly increased in chronic hepatitis patients(452.55±38.97 pg/ml)( P<0.01). The levels of IL-24 in the HBV carriers (338.78±24.75pg/ml) were higher than in the healthy group(323.36±30.44 pg/ml) ( P<0.01). Serum IL- 24 level was significantly different among patients with mild, media and severe chronic hepatitis (P<0.001). Serum IL- 24 level has no different among patients with mild and media chronic hepatitis.2. The levels of IL-24 in patients with chronic hepatitis B were positively correlate with TBIL(r=0.833,P<0.01)and with ALT(r=0.842,P<0.01). 3. the serum IL- 24 level in patients with low HBV DNA content was higher than that in patients with high HBV- DNA content (P<0.01)Conclusions:The results show that IL-24 may attend the pathological progress of hepatitis B. IL- 24 may take part in the host immunity against HBV, and is associated with HBV clearance and liver damage, to some degree. There is somewhat consistency between the patient's severity and the serum levels of IL-24, which is closely related to the prognosis. The measurement of serum levels of IL-24 may be one of prognostic factor of hepatitis B and provide clinical clues and theoretical basis.
