Objective:To analyze the clinical, endoscopic and pathological characteristic of Barrett esophagus(BE),and elementarily probe into the factors associated with the intestinal metaplasia(IM)and dysplasia. Methods:To review the clinical and endoscopic character of 547 cases BE patients who were diagnosed by endoscope and pathology between Jan 2005 to Oct 2007.Among them we took biopsy from 59 cases, whose common data, endoscopic represent and pathological types will be analyzed the relationship of those with IM and dysplasia. Results:The patients of BE are mainly male and it tends to increase with the increasing age.Part of the patients have gastroesophagael reflux desease(GERD)of different degrees, and only a few had the present of Reflux esophagitis(RE).Under endoscope the island-type BE is the most and the length of the columnal epithelium is mostly short-segment.The pathologic types are mainly fundus-type and cardia-type,which significantly more than the specialized intestinal metaplasia type, however, the incidence of dysplasia in the specialized intestinal metaplasia type is significantly more than the other two.The incidences of IM and dysplasia have no statistically different between the sexes, but they are significantly greater in the group involves the patients who are older than 30 is than the group involves the other patients. The incidences of IM and dysplasia are greater in LSBE than in SSBE,and in circumferential-type and linguiform-type than in island-type,however, both the differences are not significant. Conclusions:BE is a disease independent from RE and GERD.Male, middle and old-aged should be examed to except BE.The rate of IM detection should be improved in those who have express of BE under endoscope. The monitoring of patients who have IM and dysplasia should be emphasized.
