Rhubarb is very famous Traditional Chinese Medicine recorded in several herb books,which was used to cure disease for three thousand years.Rhubarb(Radix et Rhizoma Rhei) is the dried rhizome and radix from three species,Rheum plamatum L.Rheum tanguticum Maxim.ex Ball or Rheum officinale Baill.,Polygonaceae family.According to literatures of different dynasty,the original plants used in ancient and modern times are accordant.Radix et Rhizoma Rumex and Radix Rhizoma Sect Rheum are false Rhubarb.Raw Rhubarb,Wine fried Rhubarb,Wine steamed Rhubarb,Charred Rhubarb were recorded in Chinese Pharmacopoeia(2005).Processed Rhubarb are frequently used in clinical treatment and in great demand.As there is no national quality standard for processed Rhubarb,the quality of Processed Rhubarb makes us to worry, especially Radix et Rhizoma Sect Rheum was used as Radix et Rhizoma Rhei on the market.Radix Rhizoma Sect Rheum was the dried rhizome and radix from Rheum hotaoense C.Y.Cheng et C.T.Kao,Rheum franzenbachii Munt and etc.It's very necessary to establish the quality standard of Processed Rhubarb.As the Charred Rhubarb were used less in clinic treatment,this paper mainly study on Raw Rhubarb, Wine fried Rhubarb,Wine steamed Rhubarb.The Rhubarb component determination of Chinese Pharmacopoeia(2005) were five anthraquinones aglycone,it's not accordant with the functions of purgation.Establish the Sennoside determination can make the quality evaluation accurate and reliable.According to standard method of Rhubarb from the Chinese Pharmacopoeia (2005),60 batches Processed Rhubarb were examined.TLC method of examine Rhaponticin and HPLC determi- nation of Sennoside were established.The result shows:the Rhaponticin examination unqualified rate of Raw Rhubarb reach to 50%, Wine fried Rhubarb reach to 47%,Wine boiled Rhubarb reach to 41%.The content of anthraquinones aglycone between true processed Rhubarb and false processed Rhubarb has no different.Raw Rhubarb,Wine fried Rhubarb contains Sennoside, Wine steamed Rhubarb has no Sennoside,false processed Rhubarb has no Sennoside and Rhein.On the basis of lab research,the quality standard of Processed Rhubarb was established.The method using the chemi- cal differences to identify true or false Rhubarb was found and provided some sugges- tion to Rhubarb quality standard.
