Objective To explore the clinical effect of stereotactic radiofrequency multi–target lesion for the treatment of mental retardation. Methods with CT localization, 16 patients with meatal retardation were treated by stereotactic radiofrequency multi–target lesion.Their therapeutic effects were evaluated by Wechster Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC) and Nutional Psychosurgery Cooperation Request on Modern Psychosurgery Operation Cure (protocol) in 1988. Results postoperative follow-up study indicated threcovered that, two patients recovered, nine patients progressed remarkably, three patients improvement and noly two patients showed no change; The efficiency ration was 87.5%. The psychosurgery had no impact on intelligence. Conclusion The stereotactic rediofrequency multi–target lesion is an effective method to treat mental retardation. It is helpful to improve the self-care abiliey and social adaptability of the patienes.
