Objective: To investigate the usefulness of VEGF for diagnosing pericardial effusion of various causes. Methods: The patients of exudative pericardial effusion were classified into two groups: one was originated of malignant tumor and the other was originated of nonmalignant tumor. Using sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), VEGF, LDH and ADA was measured respectively in pericardial effusion, routine and cytological examination of pericardial effusion were also measured, the data was compared between two groups, and analyzed the clicnic characteristics. Results: 20 with malignant pericardial effusion, 9 was male, 11 was female, 11 with lung cancer, 3 with breast cancer, 3 with lymphoma, 1 with mediastinal mass, carcinoma of rectum and melanoma respectively. 26 with nonmalignant pericardial effusion, 9 was male, 17 was female, 16 with tuberculosis, 7 with connective tissue diseases, 2 with hypothyreosis, 1 with radio frequency ablation. The level of VEGF in the malignant precardial effusion was significantly higher than in the nonmalignant pericardial effusion(4.53±3.72pg/ul v.s 1.10±0.74pg/ul, P<0.01), and there were no significant difference of the level of LDH, ADA and the routine examination in two groups. And there were no significant association among ADA, LDH and VEGF. Conclusion: VEGF has determinate value in the differential diagnosis of pericardial effusion.
