Objective To compare effect of anorganic bovine bone (Bio-oss) and autogenous iliac cancellous bone on alveolar cleft repair, and to explore a simple, effective and digestible operative method. Methods 47 patients with alveolar cleft were divided into 2 groups according to transplanted material (Bio-oss for group A, autogenous iliac cancellous bone for group B). Operative procedure was conventional. In one year after operation, Wound healing was observed; maxillary continuity was evaluated by Malian's standard; height of alveolar crest was estimated by Bergland's standard; and density of bone grafting region was measured. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS 13.0.Results In 26 cases of group A, all the incisions were primary healing except one case. In 21 cases of group B, all the incisions were primary healing except 2 cases. In group A, there was one case, whose maxillary continuity was not restored due to failing to bone graft, and there were 2 cases in group B. In one year after operation, 88% cases in group A reached Bergland's type I and II standard, and 87% cases in group A reached the standard. In 3 months after operation, density of bone grafting region of group A was 69.5±14.2, and that of group B was 72.7±13.6. There was no significant difference (P>0.05). In one year after operation, density of bone grafting region of group A was 92.0±8.7, and that of group B was 86.1±6.8. There was significant difference (P<0.05).Conclusions 1. Bio-oss does not have a mechanical stimulation to alveolar bone and mucosal flap , no inflammation or rejection , made good repair effects. 2. Bio-oss bone-conduction promote the repair of local bone defects, which can be applied to clinical alveolar cleft repair. 3. Bio-oss effective maintains long-term graft of space, and avoid a premature newly formed bone absorption while conducting new bone formation, which is particularly applicable to patients with advanced two.
