Objective: To investigate the selection of therapeutic methods, indications of operation, and experience of hepatectomy for treatment of hepatic hemangioma. Methods: The clinical data of 231 inpatients with hepatic hemangioma from 2003 to 2007 were analyzed retrospectively. Results: The average age of 231 inpatients was 43. 85. About 73.59% of the patients were female. In the 231 patients with hepatic hemangioma, 166 (71.86%) were suffered with the solitary tumor (57.0%), and 65 (28. 14%) were suffered with the multiple tumor (≧2 tumors). Tumors in 118 cases (51.08%) located in the right lobe of liver, in 50 cases (21.65%) in the left lobe, in 9 cases (3.9%) in the intermediate lobe, in 10 cases (4. 33%) in the caudate lobe, and in 44 cases (19.05%) in both the left and the right, of which in 8 cases in the extended left lobe, and in 8 cases in the extended right lobe. In 81 cases (35.06%), diameters of the tumors are longer than 10cm. In 31 cases (13.42%), diameters of the tumors are longer than 15cm. 219 patients were treated. 174 of the 219 patients were suffered hepatectomy, in which 9 patients were suffered primary-tumor-resection and other-tumor-transfixtion, 4 patient was suffered enucleation, 1 patient was suffered liver transplantation, and 44 patients were suffered hepatic artery embolization. 12 inpatients were untreated. 1 of the 219 patients died of DIC caused by hemorrhage and hemorrhagic shock. The other patients recovered well except that the patient who was suffered liver transplantation died 2 years later after operation. Conclusion: Resection is the preferential treatment of hepatic hemangioma. Most of the hepatic hemangioma can be resected completely and safely. Hepatic artery ligature and hepatic artery embolization can lead to not only imperfect effectiveness, but also the risk of severe complication. Their indications should be strictly controlled.
