Objective: To review the clinical records of 212 patients admitted forsubmucosal tumors of esophagus whose diameter are less than 2cm.Andinvestigate the most suspectable age, the most frequent site and otherepidemiological data. And to improve the diagnosis, the treatment and the followupof submocosal tumors of esophagus.Materials and methods: The clinical records of 212 patients with thediagnosis of submocosal tumors of esophagus were found by theEsophagogastroduodenoscopy and finally made by endoscopic ultrasonographyfrom July 15th 2006 to Jan 19th 2009.And all of these tumors' diameter are lessthan 2cm. The age of these patients ranges from 24 years to 77 years old (meanage 51.5 years old). Male and female have the same risk. The symptom relative toswallow is rarely seen. The inspection method is EUS and TEMP.Result:The most frequent site in these patients is the lower and themesomere esophagus. 38 in upper esophagus, 73 in mesomere esophagus, 74 inlower esophagus, and 4 in others. The esophageal tumors in 197 patients aresingle, the others have more than one tumors. There were 164 ELMs, 12 cysts, 11 adipoma, 9 solitary venous dilatation and 1 heterotopic pancreas of esophagus inthe single ones. There were 11 ELMs and 3 cysts in the patients who have morethan one tumor. In all of the 176 ELMs, there are 108 originating from muscularismucosae, 66 originating from muscularis propria and 2 combine with other tumor. Conclusion: From the study of the 212 patients above, we can draw theconclusion as follows: EUS is valuable for localization of eminent submucosaltumors of esophagus, and it also can make a basic qualitative diagnosis. Theaccuracy for qualitative diagnosis can be improved by EUS-FNA. Most of thepatients were from 40 to 60 years old, and rarely seen in under 20 years old andmore than 70 years old patients.Male and female have the same risk. Because ofthe size of tumors is less than 2cm, most of the patients do not have typicalsymptom, so may be psychological factor induce the symptom of the patientswho have the symptom relative to swallow. The results of the 212 patients is inaccordance with the epidemiological data in document. We have some minimalinvasive surgery methods nowadays, such as extirpation of tumor viathoracoscope and EGD. But because of its small and rarely canceration, we couldfollow-up the patients with the EGD or EUS.
