Objective:The cytokine of the TGF-βsuperfamily called''activin A''regulates a wide variety of biological events, so it attracts more attention recently. Heart failure is the syndrome of heart dysfunction that all kinds of heart diseases can lead to, which is the ultimate outcome of various types of heart diseases in clinical. Recently, it is discovered that ACT-A has played an important role in the occurrence and the development of heart failure, such as promoting myocardial fibrosis and cardiac remodeling. In this paper, we detected the expression levels of serum activin A in patients with heart failure to discuss the changes in them and its clinical significance.Methods:82 patients with a clear diagnosis of chronic heart failure (CHF) were considered as the objects in our study, which had excluded lung, liver and kidney diseases, diabetes and other endocrine diseases. And 40 age-matched healthy people which had normol cardiac function were the control group. Patients with CHF were divided into two groups according to the left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) and E/A value: LVEF<45% group (Group I, 62 cases), normal LVEF and E / A <1 group (Group II, 20 cases). In addition, the patients with systolic heart failure (LVEF<45%, 62 cases) were divided into 2 groups on the basis of New York Heart Association (NYHA) classification of the cardiac function: Grade II group (Group HF1, 20 cases), Grade III group (Group HF2, 21 cases) and Grade IV group (Group HF3, 21 cases). ELISA method was used to detect activin A levels in serum of patients with CHF and the control group in our study. Data are presented as mean±standard error of the mean, all reported P values are 2-sided, and statistical significance is assessed at the 5% level. We used the SPSS13.0 software to analyze data in the investigation.Results:1. the comparison of serum activin A levels: The levels of serum activin A in Group I, Group II and the normol control group(Group N) were (1.81±0.44), (1.36±0.28), (1.24±0.18) ng/ml. The activin A level of Group I was obviously surpior to that of Group N (P<0.01), the activin A level of Group II was higher than that of Group N with statical significance (P<0.05), and the activin A level of Group II was higher compared with Group I (P<0.01).2. the comparison of activin A levels in accordance with NYHA cardiac function classification: Of Group HF1, Group HF2 and Group HF3, the serum activin A levels were (1.29±0.28), (1.99±0.26) and (2.11±0.24) ng/ml. There was no statitcal significance between Group HF1 and Group N, Group HF2 and Group HF3 (P>0.05). The difference between Group HF2 and Group N was significant(P<0.05). The difference between Group HF3 and Group N was significant(P<0.01). Respectively compared with Group HF1, Group HF2 and Group HF3 had the remarkable significant difference (P <0.01).3. The expression levels of serum activin A in patients of Group I with different grades of heart failure were negatively correlated with LVEF value (r=?0.76), and positively correlated with cardiac function classification (r=0.75).Conclusions:1. Serum activin A was in a state of high expression in patients with heart failure.2. The expression level of Serum activin A was positively correlated with the degree of heart failure.
