| Aim:This study aims at discussing the effect of traditional chinese medicine, radix cyathulae,on blood pressure of the spontaneous hypertension rats(SHR),on the level of superoxide dismutase(SOD) in SHR as well as whether radix cyathulae has the ameliorative or the curative power to the left ventricular hypertrophy(LVH),therefore providing theoretical basis for the clinical application of radix cyathulae.Methods:50 SHR were divided into 5 groups completely at random,i.e..(1) blank control group;(2) high-dose radix cyathulae group;(3) middle-dose radix cyathulae group;(4) low-dose radix cyathulae group;and(5) Enalapril group. Measure arterial blood pressure once every tow weeks during the administration period.After 8 weeks of administration,all the rats were executed.Weigh each rat' body weight(BW),heart weight and its left ventricle weight(LVW) respectively, then calculate the ratio of left ventricle weight to body weight(LVW/BW).Take the left ventricle muscles out and make the homogenate of myocardial tissue.Measure the activities of SOD.Results:(1) There was a significant difference between high-,middle-, low-dose radix cyathulae group or Enalapril group and SHR blank group respectively(P＜0.01).(2) There was a significant difference of the level of SOD between each treat group and SHR blank group respectively(P＜0.01).The activities of SOD in the high-dose radix cyathulae group are the highest.(3) There was a significant difference of decreasing the level of left ventricular hypertrophy between each treat group and SHR blank group respectively and high-dose radix cyathulae group has better therapeutic effect than that of Enalapril group,middle-dose or low-dose radix cyathulae group respectively.Conclusions:(1) Radix cyathulae can decrease blood pressure,Radix cyathulae decrease blood pressure in a dose-dependent manner;(2) Radix cyathulae can increase the level of SOD in SHR;(3) Radix cyathulae can protect heart,prevent and ameliorate left ventricular hypertrophy.
