Objective:To compare the treatment results of interlocking intramedullary nail and external fixation inⅢA type tibia and fibula open fractures retrospectively.Method:Taking the sixty-seven cases into two groups. One group is treated with interlocking intramedullary nail, and another group is treated with external fixation. After the treatment the average fracture healing time, weight bearing time, the rate of excellent or good of the knee and the ankle joint(by Johner-Wruh criteria),the rate for the occurrence of complications such as the postoperative infection, the internal fixation failure, delayed union or nonunion were judged as clinical observation.Result:In the treatment of tibia and fibula fracture,There were no significantly statistical differences for the healing time of fibula fracture, total weight bearing time, the rate of internal fixation failure(P>0.05),But the rate of excellent or good function of the knee joint, the healing time of tibia fracture, partial weight bearing time and the rate of the occurrence of complications such as the postoperative infection, delayed union or nonunion for the interlocking intramedullary nail group were less than another groups,There were significant statistical differences(P<0.05).Conclusion:Interlocking intramedullary nail and external fixation are both the efficient methods for the fracture of tibia and fibula. The method of interlocking intramedullay nail has the characteristics of stability, fewer complications and higher rate of fracture recovery. So using interlocking intramedullary nail forⅢA type tibia and fibular open fracture is safe and effective.
