Backgroud: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is traditionally considered to becommon in the Western world. until the last decade, low prevalence and incidence rates have been reported from Asia and the Pacific region. Recent trends indicate a change in the epidemiology of IBD with previously low incidence areas now reporting a progressive rise in the incidence, with decreasing incidence rates for Ulcerative colitis. Some of these changes may represent differences in diagnostic practices and increasing awareness of the disease. Additional epidemiologic studies are needed to better define the burden of illness, explore the mechanism of association with environmental factors, and identify new risk factors.Aims: The purpose of this study is to approach the epidemiologic feature of IBD ,as well as the proportion of incidence of Ulcerative colitis(UC) and Crohn disease(CD).Methods:We collect informations of 852 patients(480 of UC and 372 of CD) whohave been hospitalized in the first affiliated hospital of Zhejiang University from the year 1997 to 2008, and do epidemiological survey and analysis. Results:The M/F is 1.15 in UC,and 1.35 in CD. There is no significant deviationbetween UC and CD in gender, but significant deviation is found in age .Patients who undergo CD are younger than those of UC. The workers and peasants make up the majority of the patients of UC, while patients of CD are mainly peasants and intelligentsia. Patients of both UC and CD live maily in town. The incidence of both UC and CD is ascending during the last decade, and the incidence of CD is rising faster. The proportion of CD/UC has the trend of ascent. Patients of IBD make a greater propotion in man-times of patients in hospital. The primary management of both UC and CD is medical therapy. Surgical treatment is required more often in patients of CD, but the appliance of surgical treatment in IBD patients show tendency to descend. Conclusions:The incidence of IBD increased during the last decade with the processof urbanization and the incidence of CD grows more conspicuously. The primary management of both UC and CD is medical therapy. For the progress of diagnostic technique and medical treatment, the position of surgical management has fallen dowm.
