ObjectiveTo explore clinical thinking, regularity of compatibility, and application of evolution of ginseng used by ancient and modern medicine by summarizing and analyzing the properties, efficacies, indications and applications history of ginseng. It would provide reference for further research on disease prevention and control methodologies. It was also vital to provide a basis to use Chinese medicine correctly in clinical and to broaden dialectical thinking.MethodsLiterature research methods were used to arrange ginseng's properties, functions and prescription card composed by the ginseng according to the ancient Chinese medicinal literature and "Dictionary of Chinese medicine prescriptions" edited by Peng Hui. As the basis for the longitudinal use of drugs to side for horizontal, vertical and horizontal expression of prescription forms of attending and composed by the ginseng prescription card was used to collect selected prescription ginseng 282, which contained 11 unilateral and 271 compound. Dynasties were ranked in sequence in order to reflect the evolution to application of ginseng and prescriptions containing ginseng in various dynasties.Results1. Ginseng could benefit vital energy, enrich the blood, promote the production of body fluid, invigorate yang, calm the nerves, grow in intelligence or wisdom, treat hemorrhoid, promoting blood flow, support healthy energy to eliminate evils and so on. Although the functions of Ginseng were extensive, the basic effectiveness was invigorating vital energy. 2. The momentous therapeutic indications of Ginseng were extensive, however, the medical basic pathogenesis which Ginseng could treat was deficiency of vital energy, and the main manifestation character which Ginseng could be used was tired vitality, hypodynamia and faint pulses .3. Deficiency of vital energy could be divided into two types in the progression of disease, one was disease caused by deficiency of vital energy, one was deficiency of vital energy caused by disease. So it was important to prescribe the clinical prescription flexibly according to clinical indications. Meanwhile, it should be considered to treat disease which displayed obsolete.4. Ginseng combined in diaphoretic recipe could strengthen body resistance and drive away evil. Ginseng combined in prescriptions for purgation could strengthen the effect and reduce side effects. Ginseng combined in prescriptions for reconciliation could strengthen body resistance and set off evil. Ginseng combined in heat-clearing prescriptions could invigorate vital energy, promote the production of body fluid and profit stomach. Ginseng combined in prescriptions for dispelling internal cold increase vital energy and generate yang. Ginseng combined in prescription for regulating QI flow could regulate QI instead of waste QI. Ginseng combined in prescription for promoting blood flow and removing blood stasis could increase QI and promote blood circulation. Ginseng combined in prescription for hematic could flourish QI and hematosize. Ginseng combined in prescription for healing heat could nourish qi to generate fluid and quench thirst. Ginseng combined in prescription for inducing resuscitation could treat hemorrhoid. Ginseng combined in sedative and tranqilizing prescriptions could calm the nerve and grow in intelligence.5. The usage of ginseng in traditional Chinese medicine should abide by theory scale of traditional Chinese medicine and refer to modern pharmacological studies of ginseng in order to make the most of drug action.6. Ginseng should be used according to differentiation of symptoms and signs, it must not be abused. Although the toxicology research showed the toxicity of ginseng was extremely trifling, it was reported that ginseng could reduce death due to serious side effects cause by improper usage. Therefore, it was significant to control the dosage strictly and observe the changes of patients after administration for proper handling.ConclusionThe usage of ginseng was extensive, it could be used in internal medicine, surgery, department of gynecology, pediatrics, otorhinolaryn- gology, ophthalmology, stomatology, Ginseng could revive the dead, offer relief assistance and support persons in danger, so it was called "marvelous herb". The effect of ginseng on invigorating vital energy was powerful, which was critical for hematosis, taking blood, promoting the production of body fluid and firming spirit, so the effect of ginseng on these sides were also significant. The property of ginseng was yang associated with yin, it was profitable for tonifying five zang organs. Moreover, ginseng could go through the twelve regular meridians. Ginseng could be used to treat five kinds of strain, six kinds of wounds, diseases caused by seven modes of emotions, lack of QI and blood, deficiency of body fluid by proper compatibility. The tonificational effect of ginseng exceeded the narrow limits of invigorating vital energy such as invigorating lung-QI or the spleen-QI.
