Objective: To study curative effect and the functional mechanism of treating the Third Lumbar Vertebral Transverse Process Syndrome by"manipulation and functional exercise". Methods: 60 patients were randomly divided into the treatment group and control group, 30 in treatment group and others of control group. The treatment group treated by"manipulation and functional exercise", while the control group of using pure Tuina manipulation. Set up a comprehensive evaluation on the integral changes of symptoms, physical signs. Results: The"manipulation and functional exercise"group has a remarkable curative effect compared with the pure Tuina manipulation group. The improvement of the patients' symptoms and physical signs is superior to that of using pure Tuina manipulation (P <0.05). Conclusion: Clinical study shows that the manipulation and functional exercise has a remarkable curative effect. Combined with local anatomy, physiology, pathology and modern research, the functional mechanism may include: release muscle and dredge meridians, promote the circulation of qi and blood, remove spasm and reduce pain. Also functional exercise can restore the flexibility of interrelated muscles, play a role of self adjustment. Two methods complement each other, reflecting the Chinese holism concepts and curing for disease roots, making an active role in the curative effect and recurrence for the Third Lumbar Vertebral Transverse Process Syndrome.
