Objective:Trigeminal neuralgia serious impact of daily life.Up to now, western medicine therapy is mostly used, but withnot special effects and with apparently adverse reactions. While acupuncture is widely accepted as "green therapy",which is safe and accurate.Based on my tutor's clinical experience for decades on classic trigeminal neuralgia, this research aims to verify the superiority and reliability of acupuncture therapy.Methods:60 patients with trigeminal neuralgia patients were divided equally into three groups at random including:acupuncture group, treated by acupunture paused for 3 days after 12 days as a period;drug group, treated by oral carbamazepine for 15 days as a period and the combined group, treated by acupuncture based on clear effect in application of oral carbamazepine, also for 12 days as a period with a 3 days' break afteron. The improvement was observed after 3 periods including the adverst reaction and its improvement. Results:The total effectiveness of three groups showed no significant difference, and there is non-significance difference of the effectiveness of each group(P>0.05).The symptom scores in the Acupuncture group and drug treatment group had an obvious decrease, compared with significant difference(P<0.01),and combined treatment group showed non-signif icance difference within the group(P>0.05).After treatment, the adverse reactions of the acupuncture group and combined group showed non-significance difference(P>0.05),while the scores of the acupuncture group within the group had non-significance difference(P>0.05).The adverse reaction points of combined treatment group was obviously dropped, compared with significant distinction in-group,(P<0.01) while that of drug treatment group had an evidently increase compared with pre-therapy, having significant distinction in-group(P<0.01). Conclusion:The acupuncture treatment has a good curative effect and no adverse reactions on primary trigeminal neuralgia. The effect of carbamazepine is distinctive, but apparently with more adverse reactions. After treatment of combined group, the patients can gradually reduce the dosage of carbamazepine until withdrawal it,and there was no obvious difference in pain intensity between pre-therapy and post-therapy,moreover, the evidently adverse reactions caused by oral carbamazepine were all disappear.
