Objectives:Based on the analysis and generalization of both the ancient and contemporary medical literature, this thesis explores and analyzes the law and mechanism of the compatibility of the cold and the heat drugs in prescription. Meanwhile, integrated with the conclusion of the literature review and the pharmacological research results, it illustrates the compatibility principle of the cold and the heat drugs and proves its scientific-ness to treat the simultaneous occurrence of the cold and the heat syndrome. The paper further reasons the pathophysiologic mechanisms of both the cold syndrome and the heat syndrome, proposes the methods and techniques in the research of the combination of the cold and the heat drugs, and is expected to exert a positive influence in this research field.Methods: Having reviewed the past dissertation on the compatibility of the cold and the heat drugs in prescription, this paper conducts an in-depth analysis on its mechanism in classic and proved prescriptions. Combined with the contemporary research on the pathophysiologic mechanisms of the cold syndrome, the heat syndrome and the simultaneous occurrence of the cold and the heat syndrome, and that on the efficient elements and the functioning mechanism of the cold & cool medicine and the warm & heat medicine, it illustrates the compatibility principle of the cold and the heat drugs in prescription and proves its scientific-ness to treat the simultaneous occurrence of the cold and the heat syndrome.Conclusion: First, the method of combining the cold and the heat drugs originated in the Classics of Internal Medicine, in which Zhang Zhongjing employs it in light of the patient's situation and the basic rule of differentiating the primary from the secondary. Four experts in the Jin-Yuan dynasty and the School of Epidemic Febrile Disease in Ming and Qing dynasties then enrich and reform the theory to a large extent. Second, to treat the simultaneous occurrence of the cold and the heat syndrome, we have to treat the cold and the heat syndromes simultaneously, attemper Yin and Yang in human body, strengthen the curative effects and supervise the pharmacological nature of the medicine. So clinically it is a common practice to utilize the mutual-constraining and corrigent effects of the cold and the heat drugs, which best exemplifies the originality of the dialectical prescription in Chinese traditional medicine. Third, the combination of the cold and the heat drugs is able to abstract the positive effects of both the nature and the function of the medicine with a priority of its function, rectify the deviation and prevent from excessiveness, coordinate the nature of the medicine and the disease, focus on the prevention and condition the various organs of the human body. Fourth, the influence of different nature of the cold and the heat drugs is realized through their impact on the neurotransmitters, the sympathetic - adrenal system, the energy metabolism and on the endocrine system. Fifth, research on the compatibility of the cold and the heat drugs in prescription is supposed to be conducted in the fields of literature, experiment, mathematics, computer and clinic, etc. Sixth, generalize the techniques in the research of the combination of the cold and the heat drugs.
