Objectives: To assess the relationship between Interleukin -8 in serum(or plasma, peripheral blood) and Psoriasis by the mean of Meta-analysis ,in order to provide objective reference for clinical study and target treatment about IL-8 in psoriasis. Methods:Using the Meta-analysis to review all the considering case control studies of determining IL-8 quantitatively. To collect the articles from Medline(1986- 2008),ScienceDirect (1986-2008),Ovid,CBM,CNKI,WAGNFANG DATA,VIP Information. Methodological quality of trials was assessed in terms of generation of allocation sequence, allocation concealment, blinding. Two authors collected data independently and evaluated quality and results. Results: 37 articles were included with 1320 patients. The results of Meta-analysis: IL-8 in serum (plasma or peripheral blood) was markedly elevated in Vulgaris versus Normal[SMD 3.31 95% CI 2.77~3.84],Progressive versus Normal[SMD 3.49 95%CI 2.62~4.28],Quiescent versus Normal[SMD 4.96 95%CI 2.40~7.53],Regression versus Normal[SMD 8.02 95%CI 6.52~9.52]. There is no higher level between different progress: Quiescent versus Progressive [SMD 2.74 95%CI -0.06~5.00] , Regression versus Progressive [SMD -0.61 95%CI-1.27~0.04] Regression versus Quiescent[SMD -0.23 95%CI -0.84 ~0.38].The results of comparing different types of psoriasis: IL-8 in serum (plasma or peripheral blood) was markedly elevated in Arthropathica versus Vulgaris [SMD 1.68;95%CI 0.65~2.70] Erythrodermic versus Vulgaris [SMD 2.07;95%CI 1.27~2.87] Erythrodermic versus Pustulosa [SMD 1.24;95%CI 0.16~2.32], there is no significantly difference in Pustulosa versus Vulgaris [SMD 3.26 95%CI -1.65~ 8.17] , Arthropathica versus Pustulosa [SMD 0.70 95%CI -0.54~1.94], Arthropathica versus Erythrodermic [SMD-0.33 95%CI -1.38~0.72].IL-8 in serum (plasma or peripheral blood) was markedly elevated in Vulgaris versus Normal by using ELISA[SMD 3.19 95%CI 2.56~3.81] and RIA[SMD 3.05 95%CI 2.50~3.60]Conclusions: IL-8 in the serum (plasma or peripheral blood) of Vulgaris was markedly elevated than in normal, it shows that there is relationship between the overproduction of IL-8 and the development of psoriasis. In the serum (plasma or peripheral blood) of Progressive and Quiescent Vulgaris , IL-8 showed higher levels .It also showed higher level in Regression, because of no enough articles, we need more trials of high quality to prove this result in the future. There is no difference between different progress, because articles were not enough, this result needs to be proved by more trials of quality. Although IL-8 did not show difference between different types of psoriasis, we still need more articles of high quality to prove this result because of not enough articles.
