Objectives To investigate the effect of cilostazol on erectile function in diabetic rat model. Methods Diabetes were induced in 50 male adult Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats by an intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin. The DM rats were randomly divided into diabetic group (DM group) and cilostazol therapy group (CI group) 8 weeks after the injection (another 10 normal SD rats as control, C group). The rats in each group were treated with cilostazol(20mg/kg/d) or NS through a gastric perfusion for 8 weeks. Then the erectile function of all these rats was evaluated by apomorphine. Motor nerve conduction velocity of sciatic nerve (MNCV) was evaluated by electrophysiology method. Their penis tissues were harvested to measure the level of nitric oxide synthase (NOS) by colorimetric method, and the penile cell apoptosis of smooth muscle was analyzed by TUNEL assay. Results The erectile function, MNCV and NOS level in CI group significantly increased, while the apoptosis ratio significantly decreased (P<0.05), compared with DM group. Conclusions The cilostazol has some therapeutic effect in treating the decrease of erectile function in rats with by diabetes.
