Analysis Of Age Effect On Efficacy And Stability Of Rapid Maxillary Expansion

Objective:The purpose of this study was to find out the effect of age on the consequent of rapid maxillary expansion(RME) through comparement and analysis of treatment and remaining results in keletal constrictive maxillary patients of three different ages.Materials and Methods:30 keletal constrictive maxillary patients of 6-18 ages were selected randomly and divided into 3 groups:10 examples of 6-9 years of age for Group A,10 examples of 10-15 years of age for Group B,10 examples of 16-18 years of age for Group C. These cases were treated by RME for one week and maintained for six months. Cephalometric radiographs and plaster cast were made before and after treatment and retention.Changes in teeth and bones were measured and compared though SPSS16.0 statistical software.Results:All the three groups showed greater changes on the skeletal and teeth.Statistical analysis showed as the following.1.6-9 age group showed an open of the palatal raphe like an inverted triangle. Molars showed an inclination which an recover after the retention.10-15 age group showed similar changes of the palatal raphe,but they showed a more obvious molar inclination.Patients after 15 years old showed a difficult open of the palatal raphe lile in fusiform,but had the most obvious molar inclination. 2.All the arch widthes were significantly increased.Patients of younger age showed more obvious skeletal opening ratio.All the three groups showed a bigger replase rate in the anterior region than the posterior region.Patients of greater age showed a greater replase rate.Conclusion:1.Afer the rapid maxillary expansion,all the three groups showed an open of the arch width like an triangle.However,the composion of the opening differred from each other.Patients of younger age showed more bigger skeletal opening ratio and more smaller ratio of tooth.Large age group showed more inclination to compensate the difference.2.They all relapsed after the retention.The width between the permanent canine showed the biggest replase.Patients of greater age who showed a greater replase rate need a better retention effect.On the whole,all the effect can be sure in different age groups.However,the expansion in different age groups have different characteristics.The clinical applications should be based on the characteristics of each patient.
