Herpes zoster is a common and frequently-occurring disease in dermatology, which has the character of postherptic neuralgia. Chinese and Western medicine has accumulated rich curative experience of this disease, but less therapeutic effect we could get. This task discuss theoretically and clinically on theory and therapy of treating herpes zoster by mediation and heat-clearing method. We hope it is helpful for providing a new thought or method of this disease. On the aspect of theoretical research of this disease, according to the cognition of literature in the past dynasties, based on the combination of domestic reports with diagnostic and therapeutic experience of my tutor, we hold that it is induced by the evil of fire, heat and toxin blocking in the meridians, then infecting the skin, which is mainly caused by pathogenic wind-fire of the liver meridian, interior fire of gallbladder or endoretention of damp heat of spleen meridian . as well as toxic infection. To aim at the pathogenesis of this disease, mediation and heat-clearing therapy is applied to dredge the fire in the liver and gallbladder meridians, expel toxin and clear heat, then combined with modification. On the aspect of clinical research, the curative effect of treating herpes zoster of mutual stagnation of fire and toxin type by mediation and heat-clearing therapy is observe, while Western medicine is applied in the control group. The main symptoms are observed as follows: the quantity and area of skin rash, level of pain, morphology, red, swelling, burning sensation and itch of skin rash, bitter taste, dry throat, red tongue, yellow or greasy tongue coating, the change of the score of syndrome between pre-treatment and post-treatment, and VAS (visual analogue scale) scoring, chronergy indicatrix (the time of stopping blister and incrustation ,the time of abatement of pain and disappearance of pain ), the incidence of Postherpetic neuralgia, The comprehensive and pain-treating effect of the patients between 55 and 75 year-old is compared separately. The results showed that the total effective rate of the treating group was 93.3%, the total effective rate of the control group was 76.9%, the total effective rate between these two groups had no significant difference(P>0.05). For the comprehensive score of symptoms and syndrome, there is significant difference between the two groups (P<0.01) , while there is significant difference of the two groups themselves (P<0.01) . For VAS scoring, there is no significant difference between the two groups (P>0.05) , but significant difference of the two groups themselves (P<0.01). For the comparison of the comprehensive effect of the patients between 55 and 75 years old, the effective rate of the treating group is 100%, while 73% in the control group, the effect of the treating group is better. For the comparison of the pain-treating effect of the patients between 55 and 75 years old, the effective rate of the treating group is 77.8%, while 54.5% in the control group, the effect of the treating group is better. There is significant difference between the two groups in the aspect of the time of pain relieving (P<0.01) , the time of stopping blister (P<0.01) , and the time of incrustation (P<0.05) . There is no significant difference of the time of pain stopping between these two groups (P>0.05) . During the study, there was no any side effect appeared in the treating group. It suggested that mediation and heat-clearing therapy was effective and safe. The conclusion can be achieved that mediation and heat-clearing method is an effective therapy, which could obviously improve the clinical symptoms as well.
