The frequency of the carbonyl stretching vibrations (v(C=O)) of methyltestosterone, metandienone, norethindrone and 6-methylene-androstan-4-ene- 3,17-dione in single and binary solvent systems was measured by FTIR to investigate the solvent effects of the four sterone medicines in organic solvents. And the value of the formation equilirium constant K between methyltestosterone and chloroform was measured. In the single solvent system, the v(C=O) of each solute were correlated with solvent parameters. And the applicability of these solvent parameter equations was discussed. Solvent acceptor number (AN), Brownstein's parameter S, Dimroth and Reichardt's parameter Et(30) and Schleyer's linear free energy equation (LFE)(G) were included as the single solvent parameters. It showed the results of correlation between v(C=O) and G was better, and next was the one betweenv(C=O) and AN. The results between v(C=O) and the revised S were satisfactory. The multi-parameters were the revised KBM equation by Buckingham, Swain's two- solvent parameter equation and linear solvation energy relationships (LSER). It showed that the results of correlation between v(C=O) and LSER was better than the one with the revised KBM equation by Buckingham and Swain's two-solvent- parameter equation. But LSER contained four solvent-parameters that made it complicated when using it. So a three-solvent-parameter equation was submitted. As the results between v(C=O) and the new equation was satisfactory, it was worth to use.In the binary solvent systems, 1-butanol, 2-butanol, 1-propanol, chloroform and tetrahydrofuran were chosen as the polar solvents and the non-polar solvents were composed of n-hexane and tetrachloromethane. The formation and mechanism of solvent-solute interaction were discussed according to the effects of solvent-composition changes on v(C=O). The results showed that in the n-hexane/ tetrachloromethane and n-hexane/ tetrahydrofuran binary solvent systems, the solutes were affected by the dipolarity/polarizability; in the n-hexane/chloroform binary solvent system, the solute molecule could form 1:1 hydrogen bonding with chloroform; the value of equilirium constant K~0 betweent methyltestosterone and chloroform was 3.15; in the n-hexane/ monohydric alcohol, the main solvent-solute interaction was the hydrogen bonding between solute molecule and alcohol molecule.
