Objective To retrospect the history of liposuction technique and have a study on the latest progress of liposuction technique in basic research, tumescent anesthesia technique, assisted devices, the safety and the complications. Methods The history of development and related studies of liposuction technique, liposuction surgical technique and devices were reviewed. Got much useful information about basic research, tumescent anesthesia technique, assisted devices, the safety and the complications. Results①The significant contraction of the skin after superficial subdermal liposuction is secondary to dermal contracture caused by surgical trauma inflicted on the undersurface of the dermis. In addition superficial subdermal liposuction creates a new fibrous network underneath to support the skin, and skin resurfacing generates new collagen in the dermis.②Many new ways have been used to improve the tumescent anesthesia technique, and has got significant result.③Currently the technique by negative pressure and tumescent has grown into a matured contour shaping operation. In recent years the technique of vibroliposuction and ultrasound assisted liposuction has been used widely. It largely reduces the physical labor of the surgeon. It causes only minimal trauma and less pains and quick recovery.④The complications should also be paid more attention.⑤The new technique named mesotherapy has attracted the attention of the plastic surgeon. Conclusion Liposuction is a safe, effective and minimally invasive contour shaping operation. Compared with traditional liposuction, the new technuque such as vibroliposuction is safer, less traumatic, less physical efforts, more effective and thus it is worth to propagate in use clinically.
