ObjectiveFor adolescent girls with epilepsy valproate monotherapy, medication dynamic observation of the changes in pituitary gonadotropin levels for one year, to explore the effect of sodium valproate on pituitary gonadotrophic in adolescent girls with epilepsy.MethodsUse treatment in China Medical University Shengjing Hospital, pediatric neurology clinic and diagnosis of epilepsy in 8-14 year-old epileptic girl 41. In which 18 patients included in the scope of study has been carried out during sodium valproate treatment, defined as the control group, while 23 girls in a clear diagnosis of epilepsy, to be applied since valproate monotherapy is defined as the observation group. Sodium valproate in the observation group began treatment were observed 1 year, respectively, before treatment, after treatment in 3months, medication after 6 months and treatment in 12months compared among the three groups to monitor the level of pituitary gonadotropin, including estradiol, follicle-stimulating hormone, luteinizing hormone, prolactin and testosterone.ResultsIn the control group and the comparison between the observation group, or according to menarche groups, as well as sub-groups according to type of epilepsy, after comparing the various pituitary gonadotropin levels between groups was no significant difference ((p> 0.05). Only the observation group for one year the level of testosterone is lower than those without drugs. (0.365±0.310 and 0.715±0.396, P= 0.027).Conclusion Application of sodium valproate treatment of epilepsy girls for one year in most cases has nothing to dowith hyperandrogenism, polycystic ovary syndrome. Sodium valproate is still an ideal choice used to treat adolescents or young women with epilepsy.
