ObjectiveProfessor Fan Guan-jie has been working at clinical field of endocrine and metabolic diseases for more than twenty years, doing well in treating hyperlipidemia with traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). This study makes effects to collect effective cases of hyperlipidemia treated with TCM at out-patient department of Professor Fan, applies retrospective methods to summarize the inner rules of syndrome differentiation and Chinese herb selection, so as to sum up Professor Fan's clinical experience and academic attainment, enrich the TCM theory system and benefit patients and the society.MethodBased on retrospective methods, this study collects hyperlipidemia cases treated with TCM at Professor Fan's out-patient department in recent years, fills out information forms, including basic conditions, prescriptions and medical advice, uses SPSS13.0 statistical package for data processing and statistical analysis. Gounded on above statistical analysis, this thesis makes a summary of Professor Fan's main clinical experience and academic attainment on treating hyperlipidemia with TCM.Result1. This study selects 83 patients from January 2006 to March 2010, aged 30-70 years in the majority. The proportion of male and female is almost equal. Among them,51 cases are of hypercholesterolemia,45 cases are of hypertrigly-ceridemia,44 cases are of high low-density lipoprotein hyperlipidemia,16 cases are of low high-density lipoprotein hyperlipidemia,59 cases are of combined hyperlipidemia.2. Three months after the treatment,66 cases checked the blood lipid concentration,46 cases(69.7%) among them benifited availabile efficiency, 17 cases (25.8%) benifited marked efficiency,3cases(4.5%) benifited clinical control. Six months after the treatment,58 cases (67.2%) tested the blood lipid level,39 cases(24.1%) among them benifited availabile efficiency,14 cases (8.6%) benifited marked efficiency,5cases benifited clinical control. One year after the treatment,37 cases observed the level of blood lipid, among them, 19 cases(51.4%) benifited clinical control, the rest were inclined to normal standard.3. The clinical symptoms focus on dry mouth, insomnia, mouth pain, lassi-tude, soreness of waist and knee, irritability, physical pain, constipation, sweating, abdominal swelling. Dark red tongue, white coating, wiry pulse are the common manifestations of pulse and tongue. In order to elaborate the character of TCM syndrome differentiation, this study chooses four spots, including the first visit, treatment 1 month,3 months,6 months. After the data were analyzed, it is found that syndromes mostly lie in Qi deficiency or Qi-yin deficiency, associated with damp heat, blood heat, blood stasis, Qi stagnation, which possess dynamic changes in the process of disease.4. From 1035 pieces of prescriptions, it is revealed that therapeutic methods cover eight aspects, including strengthening Spleen Qi, alleviating Liver Qi stagnation, nourishing Liver& Kidney, calming Heart sthenia, nou-rishing Lung Yin, clearing heat and removing dampness, cooling blood and promoting blood circulation, defaecating. By calculating the frequency of herb application, the top 15 ones are as follows:Glycyrrhiza uralensis, Astragalus memeranaceus, Rehmannia glutinosa, Artemisia scoparia, Paeonia suffruticosa, Lycium chinensis, Coix lacryma-jobi, Forsythia suspensa, Salvia miltiorrhiza, Scrophularia ningpoensis, Paeonia lactiflora, Bupleurum chinensie, Crataegus pinnatifida, Pueraria lobata, Eclipta prostrata.5. The cases which merging diabetes mellitus or impaired glucose regu-lation are 69, merging hyperuricemia are 26, merging fatty liver are 16 cases, merging hypertension are 12. After treatment, it is noticed that the level of blood glucose and serum uric acid decreased. Conclusion During years of clinical work, Professor Fan has paid much attention to the treatment of hyperlipidemia. Under the guidance of "change-fixity-eunomy-coherency" theory, he manages the eight therapeutic methods flexibly. In addition, he considers the physical characteristic of Ling-nan population, using methods such as clearing heat, nourishing Yin, activating blood, removing phlegm, ect. Thanks to Professor Fan's treatment, patients benefit better control of hyperlipidemia and symptoms. No doubtly, it is proved that TCM enjoys superiority in treatment of hyperlipidemia. The clinical experience and academic attainment of Professor Fan on hyperlipidemia is scientific, practical and innovative, worth regarding as our valuable assets in endocrinology and metabolism field.
