Objective To study the serum levels of platelet activating factor(PAF) and tumor necrotic factor alpha (TNF-α)and their significance in patients with acute pancreatitis(AP).Methods The serum levels of PAF and TNF-αwere determined by ELISA in the patients with mild acute pancreatitis(MAP) and severe acute pancreatitis (SAP) of hospitalization at 1st,3rd,7th,14th day, and the results were compared with healthy subjects. Results The serum levels of PAF in both SAP and MAP patients were significantly higher than those in control subjects (p<0.01), on the first day after admission. The serum levels of PAF in SAP group were significantly higher than those in MAP group. The levels in both SAP and MAP groups were still higher than those in control group (p<0.01), but on the third day and the seventh day after treatment, there were not significant differences among the three groups on the fourteenth day after treatment. The serum levels of TNF-αin both SAP and MAP patients were significantly higher than those in control subjects (p<0.01), on the first day after admission, the serum levels of TNF-a in SAP group were significantly higher than those in MAP group. The levels in SAP group were still higher than those in control group (p<0.01) on the third day after treatment, but there were not significant differences between MAP group and control group. There were not significant differences among the three groups on the seventh day and the fourteenth day after treatment. Conclusion PAF and TNF-αwere closely related with pancreatic injury degree in AP, the serum levels of PAF and TNF-αmay be valuable for diagnosis, judgment of severity of AP.
