| ObjectiveInverted papilloma is a kind of benign sinonasal tumor which constitutes 0.5%～4% of all nasal tumors. It is characterized by aggressive nature and high recurrence rate and malignant transformation potential. The etiology of the lesion and the mechanism of its correlation to malignancy are still not well understood. The objective of this study is to detect the expression of TGF-β1 and TβR-Ⅱprotein in NIP and investigate their clinicopathological significances in occurrence and aggravation of this disease.MethodsA retrospective analysis of NIP were done.10 cases of nasal polyp tissues(NP),44 cases of NIP without epithelial dysplasia,16 cases of NIP with epithelial dysplasia,12 cases of NIP with malignant transformation were examined for TGF-β1 and TβR-Ⅱprotein expression by Immunohistochemistry.ResultsThe positive rates of TGF-β1 protein were 30% in NP,34.09% in NIP without epithelial dysplasia,68.75% in NIP with epithelial dysplasia and 91.67% in NIP with malignant transformation,respectively. The expression of TGF-β1 in NIP with malignant transformation was significantly higher than that in NIP without epithelial dysplasia and in NP(P<0.05),but no significant differences with NIP with epithelial dysplasia (P>0.05).Meanwhile the expression of TβR-Ⅱwere 40%,40.91%,12.5% and 0% in above four groups in turn.It showed there were significant differences between NIP without epithelial dysplasia and NIP with malignant transformation in NP(P<0.05),but no significant differsnces with NIP with epithelial dysplasia (P >0.05).Besides, the expression of TGF-β1 protein was negatively correlation to that of TβR-Ⅱprotein in the 72 cases of NIP tissue. ConclusionsThe abnormal expression of TGF-β1 and TβR-Ⅱprotein may be closely correlated with NIP of it's malignant process,but have no relation with it's occurrence.The combination analysis of TGF-β1 and TβR-Ⅱimmunohistochemical expression in NIP with epithelial dysplasia tissue may be useful for predicting malignant transformation.
