Mineral drug is an important part of the traditional Chinese medicine, but since they contain too much poisonous component, such as heavy metals, and by now there isn't any reasonable quality standard for mineral medicine, the use of mineral medicine is frequently excluded. Using eight different mineral drugs, raw and calcined ,as the objects, this study determine the content of heavy metal, active ingredient, extract and organic matter,so as to provide some information for the study on quality standard for mineral drugs. The details are as follows,1. the determination of heavy metals contentThe contents of heavy metals in eight different mineral drugs, raw and calcined, were determined by atomic absorption spectrometry and atomic fluoresence spectrometry, The result tells that the contents of six heavy metals (Pb,Cu,Cd,Cr,Hg,As) in these samples were generally high, specifically Pb,Cd and As.Different mineral drugs have very different contents of heavy metals, even the same medicine, the difference of heavy metal content between raw and calcined samples is obvious. But there isn't a certain trend between raw and calcined samples in the content of heavy metals.2. the determination of active ingredientBy now, there isn't an exact verdict on the active ingredient of these mineral drugs in this study. We can only get the possible active ingredient in these mineral drugs from literatures. For these eight different mineral drugs,Mg as the possible active ingredient in four drugs,CaCO3 as the possible active ingredient in three drugs, and Fe as the possible active ingredient in one of them. The result tells that the contents of these possible active ingredients are high in the corresponding samples, and for most of them, the contents in calcined samples are higher than in raw samples.3. the determination of extract contentThis study determines the water-solubility extract and ethanol-solubility extract in these mineral drugs by the methods provided by pharmacopoeia.By comparing and analysing the result,it tells that contents of extract in each sample are very low, different drugs need different methods to get the better result. Overall, the contents of water-solubility extract are higher than the ethanol-solubility extract in these mineral drugs, and the contents in the calcined samples are higher than in raw samples.4. the determination of organic matters contentThe study on mineral drugs always focused on the inorganic constituents, although the mineral medicines mostly contain the inorganic constituents, there should be some organic constituents. And maybe the organic constituents play important roles in the effect of mineral drugs. So the content of organic matters are determined by potassium dichromate oxidation oxidated method. The result tells that most of the mineral drugs contain low organic matters, some of them contains more, even more than 10%,so these organic matters should play some role in the effect of the mineral drugs.
