Objective :To explore the relationship of serum Visfatin with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and intima-media thickness (IMT) of carotid artery.Methods :60 cases of T2DM and 29 cases of healthy control were examined. By measuring the carotid IMT by ultrasound B, 60 diabetics were divided into 2 groups. Group AS included 31 cases with increased carotid IMT. Group Non-AS included 29 cases with normal carotid IMT. Overnight fasting venous blood specimens were drawn. Serum visfatin was measured with enzyme-linked immunoassay. Height, waist circumference, weight, waist to hip rate (WHR), glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c), blood lipid and serum glucose and insulin were also measured. Then homeostatic model assessment-insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) and body mass index (BMI) were calculated.Results:(1) SBP, HbA1c, FINS, IMT, WHR, WC, LDL, FPG, and serum visfatin in T2DM were significantly higher than those in the normal control group, while serum HDL was significantly lower than that in the normal control group (all P<0.01).(2) Compared with the control group, serum visfatin, duration,WC, TG, LDL, HOMA-IR, FINS, HbA1c, SBP, DBP, and FPG in Group AS were higher. The differences were statistically significant (P<0.01). Meanwhile, the IMT, serum visfatin, HOMA-IR, FINS, SBP, HbA1c, TC, TG, LDL and DBP in Group AS were significantly higher than those in group Non-AS (P<0.05), While serum high-density lipoprotein cholesterol HDL was significantly lower in Group AS than that in group Non-AS (P<0.01).(3) Serum visfatin had positive relationships with WC, WHR, TG, FPG,LDL, HbA1c, DBP, and SBP, and had a negative correlation with serum HDL.(4) When the multiple regression analysis was performed with serum Visfatin, IMT, LDL, and HOMA-IR were found as the influencing factors.Conclusions:(1) High plasma visfatin may be involved in the type 2 diabetes mellitus development.(2) Serum visfatin might have close correlations with blood lipid.(3) The plasma level of visfatin was positively correlated with carotid IMT. It might be used as a clinical marker to predict the degree of AS.
