The hypertensive population is increasing during the last several decades with the improvement of the living standards. Meanwhile, the disease of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular caused by hypertension has become one of the serious diseases worldwide of highest morbidity and mortality. Therefore, precaution and cure of hypertension is of great significance for modern medical studies. Although a large number of experiments indicated that cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease reduced with the systolic blood pressure decreasing 10-20mmHg or diastolic blood pressure decreasing 5-10mmHg, the results are still not satisfactory. Essentially taking blood pressure medicines is only a symptomatic treatment, and it needs a long period to be cured and often causes secondary as well as more serious diseases. Consequently, it is necessary to explore an effective treatment which has little side effects of hypertension. Objective:Based on phlegm theory, the characteristics of phlegm hypertension were analyzed in this study, in order to find a set of clinically effective treatment of essential hypertension in Chinese medicine program. Methods:Statistical method was applied to the analysis of hypertension medical records, measuring blood pressure index pre and post treatment; according to the severity of clinical symptoms before and after treatment. The scoring system was used to compare the difference between pre and post treatment, to study the effect for hypertension treatment using of Hua Tu Sheng Jin therapy.1 Basis of western medicine: based on the mean value measured on the patients of non- using antihypertensive medicine in the case of rest twice or more than twice in different days, it could be diagnosed as primary and secondary hypertension when the systolic blood pressure and / or diastolic blood pressure were≥140/90mmHg and <180/110mmHg, and there were no other diseases which might cause high blood pressure.2 According to "Clinical research instructions for Chinese medicine" published on May 2002, and the symptoms from my advisor Professor Zhang Deying's clinical study of determining phlegm hypertension:(1) The primary symptoms: dizziness, headache;(2) The secondary symptoms: dizziness, chest tightness, vomiting, palpitation, insomnia, mouth light, less eating, gastral cavity or abdominal distention, forgetfulness, poor stool, pulse slippery or muddy string stagnation, tongue body fat, creamy fur or thick.Required conditions: one primary symptom, and three or more secondary symptoms. The selected 60 hypertensive patients were taking the Hua Gu soup made from our lab (Components: Rhizoma Pinelliae, Platycodon gradiflorus, Cortex magnoliae officinalis, Poria cocos, Flos Inulae, Trichosanthes, Acorus gramineus, Turmeric, Peony pericarp, Perillaseed, Fritillaria, etc.). The Hua Gu soup was boiled twice and each time 250ml sap was taken for patients in the morning and evening. Other antihypertensive drugs during the course of treatment were ceased for 45 days. The scores before and after treatment of hypertension in patients, and systolic / diastolic blood pressure changes as well as the safety indices were investigated, to determine the therapeutic effect of the Hua Jin soup.Results:1 Comparison of the blood pressure of hypertensive patients before and after treatmentMean value of systolic blood pressure of hypertensive patients before treatment was 161.56±16.11, and after treatment it was 134.48±13.48. The mean value of diastolic blood pressure before treatment was 104.78±8.98, and after treatment it was 90.10±9.79. It revealed that the Hua Gu soup decreased blood pressure levels significantly, and in accordance to the criteria of antihypertensive effects, pronouncedly effective cases were 22, effective cases were 24, ineffective cases were 14, and the total effective rate was 76.67%.2 Comparison of clinical symptoms before and after treatment According to quantitative criteria of Chinese medicine, the score of hypertensive patients before treatment was 20.38±3.26, and the score of hypertensive patients after treatment was 5.10±1.81. It decreased blood pressure levels significantly.3 Comparison of the symptom based on Chinese medicine before and after treatmentComparing the dizziness, headache, dizziness, chest tightness, phlegm, palpitations, insomnia, mouth light, less eating, gastral cavity , abdominal distention, amnesia, constipation, Tongue, coating on the tongue and pulse condition of hypertensive patients before and after treatment, it could be concluded that patients with hypertension could be cured treated by traditional Chinese medicine. Conclusion:The above study shows that of the Hua Jin soup can significantly reduce the blood pressure levels. In the meantime, there is a great improvement of hypertensive syndromes. It is effective of the Hua Jin soup from the Hu Tu Sheng Jin therapy for hypertension treatment, which proves that the Hu Tu Sheng Jin therapy can cure hypertension, and further studies are worthy to be done.
