Study Of The Expression And Significance Of Twist In Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma

Objective:To investigate the expression and its clinical significance of Twist in nasopharyngeal carcinoma.Methods:Immunohistochemistry method was used to detect the expression of Twist in 83 nasopharyngeal carcinoma tissues and 15 normal nasopharyngeal epithelial tissues. The relationship of the expression of Twist and pathological factors in nasopharyngeal carcinoma were subjected to statistics analysis.Results:1.Twist was not expressed in normal nasopharyngeal epithelial tissues, but it highly expressed(49.4%) in nasopharyngeal carcinoma tissues (P=0.000).2.There were no relationship between the expression of Twist with age, sex and T stage. However, the patients with high Twist expression had a higher lymph node metastasis rate(P<0.001),distant metastasis rate(P=0.023),and relapse rate(P=0.040). The expression of Twist had a positive correlation with lymph node metastasis (r=0.414,P<0.001), distant metastasis(r=0.250,P=0.023), and relapse (r=0.226,P=0.040).3.5-year survival rate of the high Twist expression group was 46.34%,respectively;the low Twist expression group was 74.42%,these is significant difference between these two groups(P=0.007).Univariate analysis showed that the 5-year survival rate of nasopharyngeal carcinoma was correlated with T stage, lymph node metastasis,distant metastasis,TNM stage and high expression of Twist(P<0.05). Multivariate analysis showed that lymph node metastasis, distant metastasis,TNM stage and the expression of Twist were the independent influence factors of the 5-year survival rate.Conclusion:Twist is not expressed in normal nasopharyngeal epithelial tissues, but highly expressed in nasopharyngeal carcinoma tissues. It is closely correlated with lymph node metastasis,distant metastasis and relapse of nasopharyngeal carcinoma.The expression of Twist in cancer cells can be used as a predictive factor of NPC.
