Background:Since isokinetic exercise was put forward by Hislop and Perrine in 1967, it has been widely used in rehabilitation medicine, sports medicine, orthopedic and other medical fields owing to its unique effect. Isokinetic exercise, due to its constant velocity and adjustable resistance, is obviously superior to the traditional isometric and isotonic muscle exercise in many ways. Knee osteoarthritis is a chronic progressive joint disease, which is characterized by articulatory cartilage degeneration. The main clinical manifestations are joint pain and dysfunction, furthermore, they increasingly deteriorates with age, which is more common in older patients. It is reported that KOA patients often presented decreased muscle strength and muscle atrophy as a result of pain, however, decreased muscle strength and muscle atrophy can cause joint instability, with varying degrees of dysfunction. Isokinetic exercise is a relatively new movement pattern, can be divided into the isokinetic eccentric and isokinetic concentric contraction, according to the muscle fiber length of the contracted muscle of the participants. This study is to explore the effect of the isokinetic training on knee flexor, extensor strength, joint pain and lower extremity function of KOA patients. Objective:Isokinetic training combined with knee washing with orthopedic Chinese medicine will be applied to treatment of KOA. Objective and accurate evaluation of the therapy will be received, aiming to provide another therapeutic method for KOA, and to accumulate muscle strength data in patients with KOA.Method:To compare the difference between the treatment group and the control group in age, involved side, duration and Lysholm score before the treatment. There is no statistically significant in these areas using SPSS 17.0 (P>0.05). The two groups are comparable. After a course of treatment, the all evaluations of the two groups have been improved, but the degrees of improvement in both groups are different. PT(peak torque), TW(total work), AP(average power), MRTW(max rep total work) of flexion and extension at the angular velocity of 60°/s and 90°/s and Lysholm score will be recorded before and after the treatment, then compare the data statistically. The all evaluations of the treatment group are better than the control group. There is statistically significance between the two groups (P<0.05).Results:The early application of Isokinetic training combined with knee washing with orthopedic Chinese medicine can improve the strength of quadriceps and medial muscles, Lysholm scores, alleviate clinical symptoms, and improve the quality of patients'lives.
