ObjectiveThe objective of this study is to investigate current status of EMSS resource utilization of the elderly patients with hypertensive emergency in HeFei district.MethodsThe situation of EMSS resource utilization of 281 elderly patients with hypertensive emergency during the period from Mar. 2005 to Mar. 2010 were analyzed retrospectively.ResultsAmong 281 elderly patients with hypertensive emergency,Male and female accounted for 149 cases(53.02%) and 132 cases (46.98%) respectively. There was no significant gender difference of EMSS resource utilization, readmission rate in 30 days and Mortality in 30 days (P>0.05). All patients were divided into old age group (60~79 years old) and eld group(≥80 years old). The rate of EMSS resource utilization in old age group was 52.76%, in eld group 68.29%. The rate of EMSS resource utilization in eld group was higher than that in old age group (P<0.05). The rate of EMSS resource utilization of the patients from urban was 60.22%, the patients from rural was 49.00%, there were no significant difference between them(P>0.05). There were no significant differene of readmission rate in 30 days and mortality in 30 days about whether to use the EMSS resources (P>0.05). Hospital days in patients without EMSS resource were longer than those with EMSS resource (P<0.05). The eld group had more non-specific symptoms and co-morbidities than the eld group (P<0.01). The eld group had higher readmission rate (P<0.01) and Mortality than the eld group (P<0.05) in 30 days. The eld group had longer average hospital day than the old group. The patients from rural had higher rate of Non-specific symptoms(P<0.05)and co-morbidities(P<0.01) than the patients from urban. There was no significant gender difference in readmission rate in 30 days and Mortality in 30 days between urban and rural patients (P>0.05). Hospital day from rural patients was shorter than that from urban patients.ConclusionIt is crucial that EMSS's recognise the special needs of elderly patients due to the growing ageing population. Healthcare policy makers when allocating resources should take into account the profile of elderly patients presenting to an EMSS and their resource utilisation.
