ObjectiveTo investigate the expression of HMGB1 protein in Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC)and the correlation between expression of HMGB1 and clinical pathological characteristics as well as prognosis.MethodsTo investigate the expression of HMGB1 protein in 103 HNSCC clinical samples and 16 corresponding para-cancer tissues by immunohistochemistry. Follow-up study was done on the 103 patients involved in this research.ResultsIn an immunohistochemical study, HMGB1 had high expression in 91 of 103 cases of HNSCC (88.3%). HMGB1 overexpression was significantly associated with T classification (P=0.01),Lymphatic Metastasis (P<0.001),and clinical stage (P<0.001).Patients with higher levels of HMGB1 expression had poorer overall survival and disease-free survival, whereas patients with lower levels of HMGB1 expression had better survival.Multivariate analysis showed that HMGB1 expression was an independent prognostic indicator for patient survival. Conclusion1)Overexpression of HMGB1 in HNSCC 2) HMGB1 overexpression was significantly associated with HNSCC Metastasis/ Recurrence 3) HMGB1 overexpression has poor clinical outcome in HNSCC.HMGB1 can be of great value in predicting the prognosis of patients with HNSCC.
