Objective The aim of this study was to investigate the correlation between the the ATP-binding cassette transporter1(ABCA1) R219K gene polymorphism and cerebral infarction in the elderly. Methods This was a case-control study, which enrolled 211 elderly cases with cerebral infarction and 211 elderly healthy controls. Polymerase chain reaction-restricted fragments length polymorphism was used to determine ABCA1 gene polymorphism. Results The ABCA1 R219K genotype distribution in the cerebral infarction group studied was RR32.7%%, RK44.5% and KK22.8%, respectively. There was no significant difference in ABCA1 R219K allele and genotype distribution between the cerebral infarction group and the control group. The risk factors of cerebral infarction included the history of hypertension, diabetes, cigarette smoking and family history of stroke. Conclusion These results suggested that there was no significant difference in ABCAl R219K allele and genotype distribution between the cerebral infarction group and the control group, The ABCA1 R219K gene polymorphism was not associated with cerebral infarction in the elderly.
