Objective To explore the expression and changes of MUC5AC, MUC16 and MUC17 in human normal and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) endometria during menstrual cy-cle. Methods Immunohistochemistry was used to detect the level of MUC5AC, MUC16 and MUC17 protein in normal endometria from 80 women(20 proliferative and 60 secretor) and PCOS endometria from 20 women. Results Of the three mucin genes studied, MUC16 showed high expression levels in the normal and PCOS endometrial tissues. The level of MUC17 expression is not detected in the endometrial tissues. Statistically, higher levels of MUC16,were observed in mid secretory compared to PCOS tissues. In contrast, MUC5AC levels decreased with no significant changes in PCOS group over mid secretory endometrial tissues. Low to neglible levels of MUC17 was observed in all studied endometrial tissues. Conclusions MUC5AC and MUC16 expressions in endometrium are changed in menstrual cycle, which are probably play a role in the establishment of endometrium receptivity and embryo implantation.
