Objective:To investigate the antihypertensive effects of aqueous extract of the roots of Apium graveolens L and heart protection ,and the underlying mechanisms in renovascular hypertensive rats. Methods: Two-kidney one clip (2K1C) renal hypertension were randomly divided into negative control group, model group, aqueous extract of the roots of Apium graveolens L high, medium and low-dose group and the positive control (CAP) group, the daily perfusion for 4 months at any time adjust the dose according to weight capacity, periodic determination of rat tail artery systolic and diastolic blood pressure. After the last administration, after separation of the abdominal aorta blood, take heart, left ventricular weight (LVW) / body weight (BW) ratio, superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity, malondialdehyde (MDA), Angiotensin -II (Angâ…¡), endothelin (ET) content. Results: The determination of blood pressure, aqueous extract of the roots of Apium graveolens L of each dose group and captopril group were significantly lower than the model group were significantly different (P <0.05), shows aqueous extract of the roots of Apium graveolens L has significant blood pressure effect. aqueous extract of the roots of Apium graveolens L treatment group was significantly higher SOD activity, MDA content was lower (P <0.05). aqueous extract of the roots of Apium graveolens L treatment group was significantly decreased plasma ET levels (P <0.05), and aqueous extract of the roots of Apium graveolens L plasma high-dose group were significantly lower Ang-â…¡levels (P <0.05). Determination (LVW) / (BW) ratio, aqueous extract of the roots of Apium graveolens L of each dose group and captopril group were significantly lower than the model group were significantly different (P <0.05), aqueous extract of the roots of Apium graveolens L with the card each dose group Topley group, were significantly different (P <0.05).Conclusion: aqueous extract of the roots of Apium graveolens L can depress blood pressure in hypertensive rats and inhibit left ventricular hypertrophy.
